When travelers think of a Kenyan safari, they often imagine the rolling plains of the Mara. But for those in the know, the true soul of the wild lies in the North. Samburu National Reserve is a place of baked red earth, doum palms, and a collection of wildlife you literally cannot find anywhere else in the world.
At Pomper Adventures & Safaris, our 2026 Samburu Expedition is designed to take you off the beaten path and into the heart of this rugged paradise.
1. The Destination: Why Samburu is Different
Samburu isn’t just a park; it’s a desert wilderness cleaved in half by the Ewaso Ng’iro River. This river is the lifeblood of the region, attracting massive herds of elephants that come to bathe and drink against a backdrop of dramatic volcanic hills.
Unlike the southern parks, Samburu offers an exclusive feel with fewer crowds, making it a sanctuary for photographers and serenity-seekers alike.
2. Meet the “Samburu Special Five”
The biggest draw for any visitor to the North is the chance to check off the Special Five. These are rare, endemic species perfectly adapted to the semi-arid climate:
-
The Reticulated Giraffe: Known for its striking, geometric liver-red patches defined by sharp white lines. It is widely considered the most beautiful giraffe species.
-
Grevy’s Zebra: Taller and more “mule-like” than the common plains zebra, with narrow, elegant stripes and large, rounded ears.
-
The Gerenuk (Giraffe Gazelle): A long-necked antelope famous for standing tall on its hind legs to reach the succulent leaves of acacia trees.
-
Beisa Oryx: A regal desert antelope with long, rapier-like horns and bold black-and-white facial markings.
-
Somali Ostrich: Distinct from the common ostrich by the striking blue-grey skin on the necks and thighs of the males.
3. Your Home in the Bush: Samburu Sopa Lodge
Our 2026 packages feature the iconic Samburu Sopa Lodge. Built on higher ground, the lodge offers panoramic views of the Matthew’s Range and the surrounding shrubland.
Lodge Features:
-
Architecture: Traditional Samburu-style cottages with high ceilings and private verandas.
-
The Waterhole: The lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole that attracts elephants, leopards, and a variety of birds—right in front of the lounge.
-
Cooling Off: A large, free-form swimming pool (with a children’s section) provides the perfect respite from the equatorial sun.
-
Dining: Enjoy a fusion of local and international cuisines in an open-air dining room that lets the wilderness in.
4. The Itinerary: What to Expect
Day 1: The Journey North
We depart Nairobi early, driving through the lush highlands of Central Kenya and past the equator. You’ll arrive at Samburu Sopa Lodge in time for a warm welcome and a hearty lunch. In the late afternoon, we head out for your first game drive to catch the predators as they begin their evening hunt.
Day 2: Full Day of Discovery
This is the heart of the safari. We offer both morning and afternoon game drives. You’ll spend time tracking the Special Five and watching the famous Samburu elephants by the river. Between drives, relax by the Sopa pool or visit a local Samburu Cultural Village to learn about the traditions of these noble nomadic people.
Day 3: The Golden Hour & Farewell
One last sunrise game drive offers the best lighting for photography. After a final bush breakfast, we begin the scenic journey back to Nairobi, arriving in the early afternoon with a gallery full of memories.
